The Needs

The Second Chance Education Centre runs mainly from the help of ICSZ and donations given by other people. The school lacks on subject materials, furniture, electricity, money and teachers. The classes that they teach are all taught on a level 1 basis. They teach the following subjects: English, Math, History, Geography, Physics and Biology. They are now even working on building a science lab, where students can be taught and make experiments on the topic they are studying. The school contains big classrooms but they lack on the furniture inside them. They hold some chairs, one blackboard and desks.  The school is short on money and therefore requires donations from people. The money would be invested on the needs the school obliges.

Break-time

During break-time the students sometimes help the school with a variety of things. They help them by: working in the garden, cleaning up the classrooms, helping the teacher prepare for the next class, gather materials needed for the next class etc. If the students are not helpingout the usually play soccer and football or skipping ropes with their mates and other students. Their lunch break lasts two hours, in this time the children make and eat their own food. The menu that they usually cook is green banana soup, which is a traditional dish in Tanzania.

The School

SCEC was founded and created by Mama Lucy. ICSZ visits SCEC every summer since 2003 to get an idea on how the school is, and to support them to be able to improve. The students enrolled in the school are between the ages of 14-17. Some families in Tanzania have six children, the parents then need to decide which two children will be enrolled. They have to make this decision as the families do not have the money required for six children to be educated. The families tend to pick the boys, as they are the ones who will get a job quicker than the girls once they are grown-ups. In Tanzania the boys are favored over the girls, the women have to stay home and help the mother clean and cook, whereas the male can get jobs. When they turn 13-14 they get an arranged marriage. SCEC helps the girls out with this; they let them have a normal education just like the boys do.

Basic Information

The education in SCEC is compulsory for seven years, until they reach the age of 17. Families have the responsibility to pay for uniforms, testing fees and school supply. The whole school is taught in English.
